Welcome

Music: North Cornwall

A very warm welcome to the heart of North Cornwall. We are a nation with music in our hearts and in our bones. With shanty songs from times past, to new music written from our rugged Cornish shores there is so much to love and learn from these musicians.
Explore out site where you can find and listen to a wealth of talent, both local and from afar.
We try and feature some of our local musicians and bands each month - check out February's below - click the music note to listen to a song!

Steve Winchester

Steve has always been rooted musically and inspired by his love of the West Country's beautiful landscapes and heritage, writing songs and instrumental pieces to reflect and celebrate this unique land for some 25 years. He moved to North Cornwall some four years ago after many years as a professional solo performer playing all over the UK. He has been writing a wealth of music ever since whilst performing his music locally here in Cornwall. He is gathering an ever growing loyal following as his music continues to develop deeper into Cornwall's enviable culture. Steve plays acoustic guitar, tenor mandola, harmonica and Bodhran and records all his music in his studio at his home.

The Stowes

Since their formation in 2012, The Stowes have built on a shared love of traditional Celtic music and unique personal experience to create a signature sound that is becoming rapidly recognisable across the Cornish and Celtic folk scene. . The group consists of members Tom, Calum, Kevin and Jamie. Tom and Calum have both had successful careers at sea in the Merchant Navy, with Calum still actively serving. Kevin comes from an industrial background and so has a strong affinity to working class songs and Cornwall's rich industrial heritage, whilst Jamie’s proud Cornish and Irish ancestry has created a passionate and unique playing style. Throughout the band, a vast array of instruments can be played including the piano accordion, bouzouki, tenor banjo and 5 string banjo.

Harry Glasson

Harry, who left school at 15, developed a love of music and poetry while at sea with the Royal Navy. He was soon expressing his passion for Cornwall through his Folk music, reflecting not only the grief and hardship left by the decline of mining, but also the resilience of Cornish people.

Harry's songs have inspired generations of young Cornish singers, and his songs are sung across the Duchy. The moving 'Cornwall my Home' has been adopted as the unofficial Cornish Anthem and can be heard sung in pubs across Cornwall.

Boscastle Buoys

The Boscastle Buoys are a group of local Cornish men who love to sing. They're raising money for the Cornwall Hospice and various charities.

You can usually find the Buoys in their local pub, 'The Napoleon Inn' in Boscastle where they entertain the locals and visitors on a Tuesday Night.

Singing Sea Shanties and folk songs they are a must see for any visitor to the North Cornish Coast!

The Sound of Cornwall

'Trelawney'

Trelawny is also known as ‘The Cornish Anthem’ or ‘The Song of the Western Men’. It was written by Robert Stephen Hawker in 1824. Robert Hawker was a vicar in Morwenstow in North Cornwall.

'Cornwall my Home'

Written by Harry Glasson this song resonates with not only people who are Cornish bred and Cornish born, but with so many who have visited the Duchy and left a  piece of their heart here.

The song speaks to people's hearts, and during lockdown it has been used to inspire hope and love to those in need. Click on the links below to hear the song sung by the Cornish People's choir to support the NHS and key workers, and the Country Men.

Supporting Local Artists

Music: North Cornwall

Songs from the Duchy

Covid-19 has hit Cornwall and the hospitality industry hard. Pubs, restaurants, hotels, B&Bs and Guesthouses have had  to close their doors. The towns and villages across the county have battled to survive. The hidden victims of the pandemic are our local musicians and artists, whose livelihoods depend on the seasonal bookings from these venues. We are in the process of creating an album to showcase our local talent and help support artists and musicians in this difficult time. If you would like to donate or support this venture, please  contact us for further information.
